When researching records for this county please remember that it was originally part of Wayne County until 1818 under US rule. Before that time this county was part of Canada and under various rule according to their history. Other counties in Michigan were taken from Michilimackinac or Mackinac county.  Those are with the year: Chippewa in 1826, Cheboygan in 1840, Otsego in 1840, Presque Isle in 1840, Delta in 1843, Grand Traverse in 1851, Emmet in 1853, Manistee in part in 1855, Luce in part in 1887.
