Mackinac County
|
This cemetery is a tribal cemetery and only open to members of the local Native American tribe. In doing research I found that many of the people buried here were not included in the county death records in earlier times. There is a story included in the 1980 transcription that a member bartered for pieces of land until she owned the 1 acre that this cemetery sits on for tribe members. Cement stones were created for those buried here and placed according to custom facing east. When the state tried to come in on this cemetery she refused to give them any control over it. The cement stones are degrading and are in many instances hard to read due to wear and lichen growth. I have made larger online images than usual of the stones for visitors, due to this. 150 names exist and only 1 stone was unreadable.
